'glowing object' flying across Arizona sky

Many residents around Arizona have reported seeing a "glowing object" fly across the night sky Wednesday. Some experts believe it was either a fireball or a bright meteor. We started getting reports of the object around 7:45 p.m. Our multimedia journalist Brien McElhatten captured two photos when he saw a glowing orange light before an object started streaking across the sky. One photo shows how the glowing light looked in Chandler. The other image was taken as McElhatten kept the shutter open to show the object streaking across the sky. ”It had a big old tail, and it was so bright. I couldn't believe what I was witnessing," Valley resident Holly Pickard told ABC15. Law enforcement in the Valley also saw the object. Google debuts new flight search service

Google's long delayed flight search is finally taking off. The Internet search giant closed its $700-million purchase of travel software company ITA in April after a nine-month investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice. On Tuesday Google launched a new service that displays flights and airfares and competes with travel search engines such as Microsoft's Bing, Kayak and Orbitz. Googleflight The new tool makes it as easy to search for flights as it is to Google just about anything else. It is available at Google.com/flights or type a search into Google such as "flights from LAX to SFO." It is not yet a full-fledged service. The search feature shows results only for some U.S. cities and only for round-trip economy flights. Flights are sorted based on cost and travel time. Google directs travelers to the airline's website to purchase tickets. Google said it would bring innovation to travel search and booking. Rival travel search companies opposed Google's acquisition of ITA, saying it would harm consumers and rivals. But antitrust officials cleared the purchase with a few conditions including requiring Google to license ITA's software to other sites that compete with Google.

Harvest moon

If you're located in the Northern Hemisphere, you might have the opportunity to spot a special full moon in the sky this weekend: the Harvest Moon This month's special full moon gets its name because its appearance low in the southeastern sky for several nights historically afforded farmers extra time for harvesting crops. Before the invention of electricity, farmers relied on bright moonlight in the late summer to gather their ripening crops after sunset.
The moon typically rises about 50 minutes later each night, but during several nights around the Harvest Full Moon, it can rise between 25 to 30 minutes later across the United States. In other Northern Hemisphere locations, like Canada and Europe, the moon can rise just 10 to 20 minutes later around a Harvest Moon, according to SPACE.com's skywatching columnist Joe Rao.

alyssa campanella

Alyssa Campanella, otherwise known as Miss USA 2011, will be competing tonight for the ultimate title of Miss Universe 2011 – and it seems she’s one of this year’s favorites to win! Alyssa has been doing a great job of wearing the Miss USA crown so far. Unlike other past title holders (Tara Connor and Rima Fakih to name a few), Alyssa has been staying out of the spotlight and has managed to hold the title without any scandalous details of her past coming back to haunt her. Born in Los Angeles, California and just 21 years old, Alyssa is one of the youngest competitors this year. Her fiery red hair sets her apart from the other contestants and her incredible fan base has helped her become an early favorite.

'Spartacus' star Whitfield dies of lymphoma at 39

Andy Whitfield, who played the title role in the hit cable series "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," has died at age 39, according to representatives and family. Whitfield died Sunday in Sydney, Australia, 18 months after he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, manager Sam Maydew told the Associated Press. "On a beautiful sunny Sydney spring morning, surrounded by his family, in the arms of his loving wife, our beautiful young warrior Andy Whitfield lost his 18 month battle with lymphoma cancer," Whitfield's wife Vashti said in a statement. "He passed peacefully surrounded by love. Thank you to all his fans whose love and support have help carry him to this point. He will be remembered as the inspiring, courageous and gentle man, father and husband he was." Andy Whitfield — who was born in Wales and moved to Australia in 1999 — was a virtual unknown when he was cast as the legendary Thracian slave in "Spartacus," a role made famous by Kirk Douglas in the 1960 Stanley Kubrick film. The series proved a breakout hit for the Starz network and made waves with its graphic violence and sexuality. Whitfield appeared in all 13 episodes of the first season that aired in 2010, and was preparing to shoot the second when he was diagnosed with cancer.

Obama, Bush join together for a first at 9/11 ceremony

Last spring, just days after Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces, Obama flew to New York City for a few moments at Ground Zero, to honor those who had fallen in the terrorist attacks.
But when he extended an invitation to former President George W. Bush, the invite was declined. On Sunday, the two stood quietly in front of the bronze parapets that surround the giant reflecting pools, which stand in the exact footprints of the former twin towers. First Lady Michele Obama stood by the president's side, and Laura Bush stood next to the former president. On May 5, when he visited the site, Obama noted, "It didn't matter who was in charge, we were going to make sure that the perpetrators of that horrible act -- that they received justice."

TIFF Today: God Bless America, Dark Horse, Sony Pictures Classics 20th Anniversary, Your Sister's Sister, Cuchera

TIFF moviesToday at TIFF there are several exciting events from the Mavericks programme with Francis Ford Coppola and Tilda Swinton both in town. Sadly, I doubt I'll get to those since they've gone to rush and I'm not already in line. However, there are quite a few quality films and events today that still have tickets available. If you're still recovering from last night's TIFF party/Midnight Madness screening and don't want to stand in line all day, give one of these a shot. God Bless America (1:30pm, AMC 6) God Bless America is a black comedy follows an unlikely pair on killing spree. A 45 year old man and a teenage girl are both fed up with the idiots around them and together they decide to take matters into their own hands. Comedian and director Bobcat Goldthwait returns to TiFF with this effort. Dark Horse (2:30pm, Visa Screening Room - Elgin) This dark comedy is about a thirty-something manchild (literally) who still lives at home. He doesn't know much about life beyond collecting memorabilia, and only works for his father's company on paper. He finally gets a glimpse of the real world after going on a date that very quickly leads to their engagement. Things start to get messy after that. Sony Pictures Classics 20th Anniversary: Michael Barker and Tom Bernard (3pm, TIFF Bell Lightbox 3) Sony Pictures is celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year and co-founders, Michael Barker and Tom Bernard, will be here discussing the past twenty years. This is a rare opportunity for amateur cinematographers and film buffs alike to peak into the world of high-profile film production. Your Sister's Sister (6pm, Ryerson) As implied by the title, Your Sister's Sister explores the complicated relationships that can develop out of marriage. After one husband's wife dies, a love-triangle develops between both sides of the family and those relationships get even more complicated. Thoughtful rather than crass. Cuchera (6:45pm, AMC 10) A recent Filipino production, Cuchera dives right into the country's drug smuggling problem. Rather than creating a doc about the issue, young director Joseph Israel Laban chose to use fiction to explore the issue and discover how drug mules become jaded and desensitized to such a dangerous world. A big thanks to Warrior, an Alliance film in theatres September 9th, for sponsoring our coverage of the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.

Courage of Flight 93 victims lauded at dedication f

The 40 passengers and crew who fought back against their hijackers aboard Flight 93 on Sept. 11, 2001, performed one of the most courageous acts in U.S. history, former President George W. Bush said Saturday at a ceremony dedicating the first phase of a memorial at the nation's newest national park. The two-hour ceremony also kicked off a bipartisan effort conceived backstage to raise about $10 million to finish the memorial's first phase and maintain it in the future. Michigan scores with 2 seconds left, stuns Irish

Denard Robinson stunned Notre Dame in the final minute again, capping a heart-pounding, pom-pom pumping night under the lights at the Big House. Michigan's star quarterback threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Roy Roundtree with 2 seconds left to lift the Wolverines to a thrilling 35-31 win over Notre Dame on Saturday night. "It's never over until you see zeros on the clock," Robinson said.In the first prime-time game at Michigan Stadium, matching up storied programs trying to restore their luster, new Michigan coach Brady Hoke could have chosen to kick a field goal to force overtime. But Hoke gave Robinson a shot, and it proved to be good idea. "Coach took a stab," Roundtree said. On a night when Michigan Stadium was vibrant, with a boisterous crowd of 114,804 fired up an hour before kickoff, the Wolverines took their first lead on Robinson's 21-yard pass to Vincent Smith with 1:12 left. Then they lost it. Briefly. Tommy Rees threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Theo Riddick with 30 seconds left, but the Fighting Irish left Jeremy Gallon wide open on a pass that let Michigan go from its 20 to the Notre Dame 16. "That was an exciting football game," Hoke said. "Both teams fought for 60 minutes. It wasn't pretty at times on both ends, but as I told my players, it's great to win." The Wolverines (2-0) have won three straight against the rival Irish (0-2) on late-game plays by their quarterbacks. Last year at Notre Dame, Robinson ran for a touchdown with 27 seconds left, and Tate Forcier threw a TD pass against the Irish two years ago with 11 seconds left. "It's devastating," Irish receiver Michael Floyd said. "It's hard to take this one in. It's distressing." Its the first time Michigan has beaten Notre Dame three straight times since 1908. Robinson didn't match his game last year against Notre Dame, when he had a school-record 502 total yards, but Notre Dame couldn't stop him when it mattered. He was 11 of 24 for 338 yards with four TDs and three interceptions and ran 11 times for 108 yards and a score. That one came on a fortunate bounce, when he scooped up Stephen Hopkins' fumble inside the Notre Dame 1 and trotted in. "It was kind of crazy," Robinson said. "I've never scored like that before." With a new patch on his jersey bearing Desmond Howard's name, Junior Hemingway, caught three passes for 165 yards and a TD. Michigan honored the former Heisman Trophy winner -- who made a diving catch on fourth down against the Irish in 1991 -- by announcing that the No. 21 jersey would always have his name on it. Notre Dame was doomed by turnovers for the second straight week. Rees threw two interceptions, one near the end zone, and fumbled deep in Michigan territory. Cierre Wood, who gave Notre Dame a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, also fumbled. "You can't have turnovers. Period," Rees said. "You have to eliminate them." In his first loss in five starts, Rees was 27 of 39 for 315 yards with three TDs and two interceptions. Wood ran for 134 yards and a score on 25 carries. Floyd caught 13 passes for 159 yards, becoming Notre Dame's career leader in yards receiving, and matched a school record with his 15th 100-yard receiving game. The Fighting Irish did whatever they wanted on the ground, through the air and on defense early on. In the end, though, they couldn't make enough plays on both sides of the ball to get a needed win for second-year coach Brian Kelly. "We're not good enough," Kelly said. "There's not one individual in that locker room, including all the coaches, that are good enough right now."

Miss Universe Hopeful Told to Wear Panties

Miss Universe officials have a message for Catalina Robayo, Colombia's entry into Monday's contest: Don't forget to wear underwear.
Robayo, one of 89 beauties from around the world competing to win the Donald Trump-owned contest, has been reprimanded for making appearance in tiny skirts - with no panties. "Colombia had to be spoken to and told she needed to wear underpants as what she was doing was totally inappropriate," a source told Fox News. "People have been pretty upset by it; there have been photos and media appearances where she has completely had her crotch out." The contest, being held in Sao paulo, Brazil, might benefit from controversy, but going commando goes too far. "Our supervisors talked to all of the contestants about dressing appropriately, and one of our PR people spoke to [Robayo] and apparently she said she was wearing underwear, said Miss Universe President Paula Shugart. "But regardless, it created quite a stir here for a few days."

6.4 magnitude quake shakes southwest B.C.

A major earthquake that rumbled across Vancouver Island was felt as far away as B.C.'s Okanagan Valley to the east and Seattle to the south, but caused no injuries and apparently little damage when it hit midday Friday. The estimated 6.4-magnitude tremor occurred at 12:41 p.m. PT, with an epicentre about 50 kilometres off the west coast of the island, about 300 kilometres west of Vancouver. Initial reports estimated the quake was as large as magnitude 6.8, but those estimates were later downgraded No tsunami warning was issued. From our readers "Staff felt the earthquake in my shop in Gibsons Landing, B.C., on the Sunshine Coast. Didn't know what was happening; crystals on the chandeliers shook and swayed, ceiling fixtures moved and felt it in the floor as well." - Nancy Hache “We sure felt it at our house, we are located at Parksville/ Nanoose Bay area [on] Vancouver Island. Computer chair swayed and monitor was shaking." - Leila Owens "I looked out the window down below to King George Boulevard [in Surrey] and felt very unstable, scared as the building moved inches." - Nina Kabatoff Honn Kao, a research scientist at the Pacific Geosciences Centre in Victoria, said the tremor was significant but not large enough to present a danger in the ocean.. "Usually if the earthquake is bigger than magnitude 7, then there will certainly be a possibility that a significant tsunami can be generated," said Kao. "For an earthquake with this kind of magnitude ... although the possibility is still there ... we don't think the threat can be as devastating as those big ones." Perry Schmunk, who runs the Long Beach Lodge near popular tourist destination Tofino, was standing on the beach and said the sand shifting suddenly under his feet felt like standing on a waterbed. "It shook — not violently, but it started rolling significantly for about half a minute. It went on for quite a while." Tofino is the closest community to the epicentre.

Kid Rock feeling optimistic about Detroit football

Kid Rock will be celebrating the kickoff of the National Football League season with a concert at Lambeau Field, but his thoughts are with his hometown Detroit Lions. “I think the Lions are going to win nine or 10 games,” Kid Rock said by phone this week. “They really have turned it around. … It’s been a long time coming here in Detroit.” The Lions haven’t had a winning season since 2000. Last year they won six of their 16 games, which was four more than they won in 2009 — and six more than in 2008. Kid Rock, who’s known for dabbling in musical styles from hip-hop and hard rock to country and Southern rock, said in an interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday that it’s been tough being a football fan in Detroit ever since he can remember. But it helps ease the pain to be a fan of more than one football team, so Kid Rock has adopted the Green Bay Packers as one of his teams. On Thursday, Kid Rock will join Lady Antebellum and Maroon 5 for a concert at Lambeau Field, the home of the Packers, in Green Bay, Wis., where the Super Bowl champions will play the New Orleans Saints in the inaugural game of the NFL season. Kid Rock, whose hits include “Bawitdaba” and “Cowboy,” said he expects an energetic crowd for the season opener, which will air on NBC. “I’ve been to a playoff game in Lambeau Field, so I know their level of intensity,” he said. Kid Rock is a sports fan, but he’s more partial to football: He was born on Super Bowl Sunday, in 1971, when the Baltimore Colts beat the Dallas Cowboys in Miami. Still, he had a backup plan if the NFL work stoppage had scuttled the season: “Just watch NASCAR.” ___ Online: http://www.nfl.com http://www.kidrock.com

Public nudity pushes boundaries in San Francisco

A city official introduces a measure to put limits on nudity and provide posterior protection for public seating. The proposal has ignited a debate on acceptable behavior in the notoriously open city.

Reporting from San Francisco -- Yes, there are limits to acceptable behavior, even here in the open-armed home of naked jogging, public floggings and all things boundary pushing.

Retired math teacher David Goldman and his husband, Michael Koehn, were sharing a pleasant alfresco moment at a public plaza in the heart of the Castro district this week, passing a slender joint between them (medicinal, of course), as Eric Anderson sunbathed one table over. Naked.

Resplendent in flip-flops, hoop earrings and a sheen of Coppertone, the out-of work retail manager, 44, had draped a lime-green sarong between flesh and public seating.

Naturists call such posterior protection "normal etiquette." But San Franciscans soon may call it the law.

Supervisor Scott Wiener, who represents the Castro, has just introduced an ordinance that would regulate nudity, igniting a rare debate in this famously tolerant city over personal freedom and public propriety.

Rush Limbaugh predicts: Marco Rubio will be president

The top-rated political analyst made the prediction this afternoon while making a point about sticking to candidates with conservative purity instead of promoting moderate Republicans.

"You want conservative purity," said Limbaugh, "I'll give it to you: Marco Rubio, who is someday going to be president of the United States."

He made the statement as part of an in-depth discussion on whether conservatives should remain faithful to their values, or become more moderate.

He cited Rubio, an unabashed conservative, who defeated former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, often described as a moderate, in the race for U.S. Senate.

The 2012 Republican Presidential Candidates

Former Vice President Dick Cheney isn’t picking sides in the battle for the 2012 Republican Presidential nomination, but in a remarkably candid interview with ABC News in Los Angeles, he had blunt words about the current field of GOP candidates.

Cheney accused Rick Perry of using “over-the-top” rhetoric, chided Michele Bachmann for overpromising on the campaign trail and said that Jon Huntsman’s views on Afghanistan hew too closely to President Obama’s.

The comments came in far-ranging interview with ABC’s Jonathan Karl where Cheney discussed, at length, his health problems, criticism of his book and reflected on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

But on the politics of today, Cheney said it was “inappropriate” for Perry to say that he would treat Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke “pretty ugly down in Texas.”

“I disagree with him,” Cheney said. “Obviously he’s just getting started on the campaign. I’m not sure if he were to get elected he’d want to use that kind of language on the Fed Chairman.”

While Cheney acknowledged that “you don’t want somebody at the Federal Reserve who’s managing the place, quote ‘for politics,’ he said the charge that Ben Bernanke or his predecessor Alan Greenspan have done that “isn’t a valid charge.”

Buddy Holly day in L.A.

Today would have been the 75th birthday of the rock and roll pioneer who died at 22 in the 1959 plane crash that also killed Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson. At 11:30 a.m. outside the Capitol Records building, Holly's widow Maria Elena Holly will accept his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Musicians Phil Everly and Peter Asher and actor Gary Busey, who starred in the 1978 film "The Buddy Holly Story," are scheduled to speak. Later tonight, a concert at The Music Box with Asher, Stevie Nicks, Lyle Lovett, Graham Nash and others performing will be filmed for a PBS special airing in December. Asher produced Listen to Me: Buddy Holly, an album released Tuesday of favorite Buddy Holly songs performed by Nicks, Ringo Starr, Brian Wilson, Linda Ronstadt, Jeff Lynne, Jackson Browne, Chris Isaak, Natalie Merchant, Zooey Deschanel and others. Randy Lewis in the L.A. Times discusses the album. The day is a pretty big deal in Holly's hometown of Lubbock, Texas, where a local fan gets credit for doing the heavy lifting on the Walk of Fame star. If you have no idea how Buddy Holly shaped the music you listen to, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will help you out: Buddy Holly played rock and roll for only two short years, but the wealth of material he recorded in that time made a major and lasting impact on popular music. Holly was an innovator who wrote his own material and was among the first to exploit such advanced studio techniques as double-tracking. He pioneered and popularized the now-standard rock-band lineup of two guitars, bass and drums. The Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan, among others, have all credited Holly as an inspiration for their music.

Admitting that she can’t stop the hunk talking about his dancing days, Alex told The Sun: “Matt has not shut up since the day I told him I was taking part. “He has a line of advice for absolutely everything, from what to eat, who to be partnered with, to hopping on one leg for balance. “I go to bed hearing his voice. I think when I’m practising with my partner we’ll see Matt’s head bobbing at the window.” Alex will find out tonight which professional she will be partnered with for the series, and the scenes will be aired in a special episode on Friday night.

americas got talent 2011

1. Miami All Stars Tonight they've gone with a football theme. Hmm. It made them feel more like a football halftime performance than a ballroom dancing troupe. It was still good and there was still all the tricks we're used to, but it just felt ... off. The drummers and basket tosses and the silly mascot didn't work for me. I 'm not sure totally how to describe it, but I think Miami All Stars just blew it from advancing to the Top 5 (not that I thought they were one of the favorites anyway). I agree with Piers that it became a cheerleading act. 2. Lys Agnes Oh wow, Lys' mom is super pretty, love the old picture of her. In her package when she says she's going "nontraditional," I get worried. Messing with what works at this stage is not usually the answer. As the strains of Aerosmith's "Dream On" kick up, I get even more nervous. And then a very thick drag queen-y voice comes out of her. It takes me awhile to decide if I like it, but I have to say - no. I don't. This is weird, it's off-putting and she sounds like a male Cher impersonator and her last high note is off pitch. I'm very disappointed, I think that was a silly risk to take on her part. With her good looks, sad story and emotional opera performances, she was a shoo-in for Top 5 and I think she just blew it. Honestly, I think the only thing that will save her is Piers' critique. He's the Simon - his critiques can make or break you. 3. Landon Swank Tonight he's got "I Don't Wanna Be" playing while he does close-up magic in an apartment set. It's ... hmm. It's sexy and very TV friendly, but a little slow. Until he puts his hand into a glass fish tank and vanishes a goldfish. Wow, that was cool. The end was awesome. I hope it's enough, I really like him. He admits after that this is the first time that trick has worked the way it's supposed to - props to him for attempting a trick he wasn't sure would work. 4. Anna Graceman She's singing "True Colors" and I about lose my mind right from the opening bars. I love this song. I wish she was playing along, this has a pretty piano part. But anyway, it starts off nice and low-key, which is good because it builds to the part where she starts futzing with the melody line (in a good way). I liked it. I didn't love it. Here's why - this song has a beautiful piano part and do you remember how Simon would always talk about having your "moment" on "Idol"? The moment where we could see the person in the finals? I think Anna missed her moment. I think she should've been at a piano, no back-up singers, no guitar, no video of the tree in the background. Just stripped down, beautiful voice, beautiful piano and we're all crying out eyes out. That would've been amazing. As it was, it was still good - but good, not great. 5. Silhouettes I'm doing pretty well during their video package until the leader talks about how she can't have kids, but when they call her mom, her life is fulfilled. And then I'm crying. Geez. The call tonight is "I Believe" and a bit of a retread of their America performance from two times ago but it seems to be one man's journey interspersed with America imagery. Um ... it's OK. It seems more thrown together than in past weeks, but they did only have a week to prepare. The man's journey and the random America images didn't really gel, but since we all know how the voting goes on this show, I would expect them to be here next week. The judges go nuts over it and Piers talks about being proud to be an American, but I honestly thought it was a little ham-fisted. The man's journey had nothing to do with the White House, the Space Shuttle and the Moon Landing, unless we're suppose to think this nameless protagonist did all those things? Hmmm. OK, clearly I have just lost my mind and am reading way too much/expecting way too much from "America's Got Talent," but I'm just saying what I felt. 6. Smage Bros. Riding Show How many times can I say they need more room? I just don't even think we're seeing their best stuff in this small of a space. Tonight they have assembled a collection of colorful ramps. I just don't think this will advance. I'm fairly bored watching little Trey run around the stage and have the bikes jump him for two minutes. 7. POPLYFE This week they've gone with the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There," "I Want You Back" and "The Love You Save." The slow opening is gorgeous. Kelani gives me goosebumps. Then the fast part kicks up and her dancing is fabulous, what a fun choice. Vocally, the verses are really rushed. I appreciate that it's more up-tempo then the 70s version, but they could've slowed down just a touch. Then "The Love You Save" is not the song I would'v ended with, just because it's less well known. I would've ended with "ABC." Anyway, it was fun, Kelani sounded great and my only criticism is that it was a juuuust a little too fast. 8. West Springfield Dance Team The story tonight are these Gentlemen-from-'Buffy'-looking vampires chasing a pretty blonde girl in a white dress. The beginning is very creepy. The middle gets a little slow, but the moves are cool. Piers buzzes them, but I think he's just expecting something super fast. I'm actually kinda digging the slower feel and the ending is super creepy, when the head vampire kills two other vampires by thrusting his hand through their chests. The judges are not complimentary, but I think they're a bit hard on the dance team. I don't think they'll advance necessarily, but I thought it was OK. Piers pulls one of those "Idol" judge things that also infuriates me where he tells them they should've gone non-horror tonight to show their range. But Miami All Stars went outside-the-box and got slammed for it. They tell people to change it up, but honestly? Changing up from what you do best is usually a killer. Sometimes it works, but most of the time it doesn't. I don't think West Springfield was nearly as lame as the judges made it sound. 9. Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. Tonight he's got a full band backing him on "Ain't That a Kick in the Head" and I just cannot get over how much he sounds like Ol' Blue Eyes or Dean Martin or whoever. You guys, it's crazy! I have nothing new to say! He's wonderful, he's charming and I think he's very talented, even he keeps doing the same thing every week. This week he had some moves! I want to see him advance. *shrugs* 10. Team iLuminate The creator who runs the computer is dancing with them this week, which is cool. What tells me a lot about how cool their routine was this week - it was over and I hadn't written a thing about the performance because I was completely transfixed. I can't really describe all the awesome effects, but it was so visually stunning. It was also much more dance-centric this week, which was neat. Loved the Nuttin but Stringz music too

Rachel Zoe: The Stylist as Celebrity Designer

In a dressing room at the Saks Club on the third floor of the Fifth Avenue flagship, Rachel Zoe is advising a petite, strawberry-blonde 17-year-old shopping with her mother on how to wear a white sequin blazer. “I like to wear it a little bigger, so you can wear a zero or a two or a four,” she tells her. “If this part is too low,” she says, explaining the seam should not hit below the shoulder for the coolest slouchy effect, “you can’t cheat it.” As a stylist, movie stars pay Zoe a rumored $10,000 a day for such dressing advice, but today, she’s not just styling, she’s also up-selling her brand new clothing line, Rachel Zoe Collection, which hit more than 100 retail sales floors in the U.S. and Canada four weeks ago. The seventies- and boho-inspired wares, which include suiting, long dresses, blouses, sequin minidresses, and faux fur vests, look exactly like something Zoe would wear. “It’s insta-chic,” she tells her next client, a 30-ish hedge fund manager, helping her into a camel cape. “I don’t mean to sound like a walking advertisement, but it is.” That $695 wool cape has already sold out at Nordstrom, which will reorder it before the weather actually feels like fall, at which time they’ll probably sell out of it again. Zoe has been a boldfaced tabloid name since 2004, when she made over Nicole Richie in her boho-chic image. But she became a star in her own right after her Bravo reality show The Rachel Zoe Project debuted in 2008, with the last season finale attracting 1.1. million viewers (the show’s fourth season premieres tonight). So when her collection debuted at New York Fashion Week last February, it did so as yet another clothing line by a celebrity. But Zoe’s line, unlike a lot of celebrity lines, is neither cheap nor fleeting nor forgettably drab. The difference may be the fashion credibility she earned after working for many years behind the scenes, not only dressing folks like Britney Spears and Jennifer Garner, but styling fashion shoots for magazines like Harper’s Bazaar and ad campaigns for brands like True Religion. No one knew that red-carpet stylists existed until Barbara Tfank famously dressed Uma Thurman in Prada for the 1995 Oscars (it was one of the first times a star appeared in something you could actually buy off the rack, as opposed to a specially made gown). Since then, none have become as famous as Zoe, thanks to the public's increasing fascination with the machinations of the fashion industry (due in part to reality shows like hers!) and the rapidly proliferation of fashion websites in need of their own celebrities. Now stylists like Zoe, Nicola Formichetti (who became creative director of Mugler after styling Lady Gaga), and Taylor Tomasi-Hill (who consults for Sigerson Morrison) are almost as famous as the stars they dress, and creating a personality is part of the job — something agents look for when signing new talent. For a first-time line, the Rachel Zoe Collection’s launch was unusually large. Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, and Intermix all picked it up, and they claim they’re already having trouble keeping the pieces, which range from $250 to $700, in stock. “It’s been a long time since we’ve taken that kind of risk with a first-time designer at Bloomingdale’s,” says Stephanie Solomon, the women’s fashion director at the chain, which normally launches new lines in only “a handful of stores” (the Zoe line is in eight). Nordstrom’s Vice-President of Designer Apparel Jennifer Wheeler agrees that something felt different about this line: “It’s great when you have a name, but if you don’t have the goods — if the collection wasn’t good — it wouldn’t work,” she says. Nordstrom executives say the sell-through rate has quadrupled expectations. Colleen Sherin, Senior Fashion Director of Saks, also describes the volume Saks bought of the collection as “unusual.” “It’s not just a one-season kind of thing,” Sherin says. “She’s in this as a serious business.” Zoe, whose favorite words are “maj” (short for “major”) and “bananas” and “I die,” may not sound like your typical businesswoman. But she emphatically prefers to call herself that, rather than a “celebrity.” And the strategic moves she made in conceiving this line indicate that she is indeed a businesswoman — and a very good one. First, she partnered with Li & Fung, the highly successful manufacturer that does $20 billion in U.S. sales annually and counts House of Deréon, Jennifer Lopez’s Kohl’s line, and Sean John men’s sportswear among its brands. Catherine Moellering, executive vice-president of Tobe, a retail trend consulting company, suspects Li & Fung gave retailers confidence, practically speaking. She explains, “With Li & Fung, [retailers] feel very comfortable stepping out with it from a production standpoint. It’s going to be flawless, and there are not always great examples of celebrity start-ups that can execute. Li & Fung just knows how to do it — they understand the profitability dance.” Second, Zoe positioned the line in an underserved part of the market. The price point of The Rachel Zoe Collection puts it “right on the cusp of bridge” — a category that includes Tory Burch and Elie Tahari — “which is consistently the most problematic in the department store puzzle,” Moellering says. Moellering wonders if Li & Fung, which boasts strong relationships with many retailers, tapped its network to find out where the greatest market share would be for Zoe: “In relation to the market, and where there is a void, that seems very smart to me.” Zoe says she made a conscious decision about pricing “because I think that there are enough brilliant designers doing the designer clothes at this point.” She adds, “I was really maniacal about keeping prices down. And I remember there were certain pieces that I loved the sample, and I would sit with my design team and it was like this is this amount of money, and I was like, I'm not going above that price point. It's too expensive.” She made a bold debut with tailoring, which is never easy to do and especially not for a first collection, including pantsuits in plaid, black, and tan. Sequined frocks and tiered cocktail dresses in cream and leopard also figure prominently. The outerwear included faux fur vests and coats with faux fur paneling — easy shortcuts for those who want to copy the stylist’s trademark look. The line is more L.A. glam than New York cool — stylish but not so stylish that it’s scary to casual observers of fashion. Moellering easily sees Zoe’s brand becoming the “full-on lifestyle” kind, growing until it encompasses everything from clothes to jewelry to swimwear to fragrance. “Li & Fung, they’re not doing this to be a $20 million dollar business, they are doing this because they want it to be a multi-billion dollar business.” Zoe will tell you she works hard for all this. “I've worked with a lot of designers. I really understand the design process,” she says. “It is so much fun, but it is a lot of work. I picked this sequin out of ten thousand sequins, I picked this wool out of a hundred wools, I picked this faux fur out of four hundred samples of faux fur.” Such claims are not uncommon from celebrities with clothing lines, who often tell the press they know how to make great clothes when they’ve actually had little to do with the line that bears their name. But Zoe’s background as a stylist brings her extra credibility. “She’s a celebrity because she’s an incredible stylist,” notes Nordstrom’s Wheeler. “The two are very interrelated. She always had her finger on the pulse of where fashion is going, and she indeed helped push it in that direction. And she knows what makes women look good.” Though Zoe says she didn’t know her aesthetic would be huge on the runways when she launched the line, that’s exactly what happened. “Who really does boho and seventies better than Rachel?” Moellering says. “And those have to be two of the biggest trends right now.”

'Barbie Girl' Tops Rolling Stone's Worst Songs of the '90s

When people look back on a decade's music they tend to focus on the good stuff - but the people who lived through the time period know better. While the 1990s certainly had amazing music, not everything on the radio was Nirvana or Radiohead. Michael Bolton, Kenny G. and Vanilla Ice sold enough records to fill 500 landfills - which is where most of those records now reside. Last week, Rolling Stone asked readers to vote for the worst song of the 1990s. And topping the list is Aqua's "Barbie Girl." "Barbie Girl" - written by the Danish dance-pop group Aqua - is an incredibly polarizing song. Many people were offended by the portrayal of a woman as a man's plastic doll, begging him to "undress me everywhere." Others loved the over-the-top cartoonish video and bizarre sound of the song. Mattel (the makers of Barbie) were less than pleased that their product was being presented in such an overtly sexual way and filed a lawsuit. The courts ruled that the song was a parody and thus permissible, but Mattel took it all the way to the Supreme Court. The company had a change of heart in 2009, when they changed the lyrics and used the song in an ad campaign. http://new.music.yahoo.com/videos/--2149453

GTL’s NFL Picks, Week 1 2011

I watched Super Bowl XLV live. Last year, about halfway though the season, some buddies convinced me to publish my spreads because being the betting types, they liked MY odds and O/U’s better than they did the services they subscribed to, convincing me I was just as good if not better than the pay services. So I did. Then they started asking me for my “LOCKS” a few weeks later. So I gave them some… sometimes only one or two, sometimes a few per week depending upon what my PERSONAL math on the games told me and how strongly I felt about my own math. I went 27-5 on my NFL “LOCKS” and spent the last third or so of NFL Season 2011 being thanked, tipped and having my tabs picked up by grateful bettors. I’ll be doing this again this year but since I DO, IN FACT use my own formula in picking my weekly winners; a formula I’ve been tweaking since I was about 12 years old, I depend upon data. In the first few weeks, there is NO dependable data for me to utilize, which is why I won’t be publishing point spreads and locks until I feel like my data is reliable enough to do at least an ALRIGHT job. Anyway, just for the sake of fun as always, these are my NFL Week 1, 2011 straight up, head-to-head picks and like always, I appreciate when the readers chime in with their own picks and discussion in the comments section. Sons Of Anarchy Season 4 Review: A New Beginning

Sons of Anarchy’s fourth season premieres this week, returning us to the fictional Northern California town of Charming and the lives of the men of SAMCRO and their old ladies. As Season 3 may be viewed as a dip in plot development by comparison to the first two seasons, I have high hopes that the fourth season will get the story back on track. Based on the first few episodes, the show is certainly headed in the right direction. Things are changing in Charming, and I’m not just referring to Jax’s new haircut. When Season 3 left off, much of the Sons of Anarchy Motor Club, Redwood Original crew were hauled off to prison. Season 4 picks up fourteen months later, and begins with the release of Jax (Charlie Hunnam), Clay (Ron Perlman) and the rest of the incarcerated bikers. We see that Tara (Maggie Siff) has been raising Jax’ son Abel, along with their baby son, with the help of Jax’s mother Gemma (Katey Sagal) and the rest of the club. Life has gone on on the outside, but everyone is excited to have the club back together. There’s a tone of hope and renewal at the start of the premiere, but we soon begin to see hints of the impending changes made to Charming and unsettled grudges, some of which are due to things that took place during the interim between Seasons 3 and 4. Prison life wasn’t easy on the guys and Jax’s chest bears the scars to show for it. The guys return to Charming to find their families waiting, along with the new local law enforcement, headed by Eli Roosevelt (Rockmond Dunbar), a motivated lawman with years of experience dealing with gangs. Roosevelt isn’t SAMCRO’s only opposition. They also have the scores to settle with other people on their own side of the law, and issues with Mayor Jacob Hale (Jeff Kober), who’s intent to modernize Charming, including building a housing development that promises small town living with modern luxuries (and mortgages well outside what the typical Charming resident would be able to afford). As part of SAMCRO’s goal has always been to look out for the town, seeing it turned into a trendy, cookie-cutter town intent on importing upper-middle-class residents isn’t exactly an ideal scenario. SAMCRO’s biggest opposition comes from within, as Jax considers his future within the club, Gemma worries over what kind of influence Jax’s father may still have on his son from beyond the grave, and Clay prepares for life beyond the club as his arthritis threatens to pull him off of his bike and out of his position as leader of the crew. Of the internal issues, I’m most intrigued to see the relationship between Tara and Gemma continue to develop. Gemma has years of experience being an "old lady" in the club. She's made some tough choices for the better of the club, some of which we've seen firsthand over the last few seasons. While Tara is hardly new to Jax’s world, Season 4 has Tara further along in finding her place within the club and in Jax's life, and figuring out what she wants for herself, her relationship with Jax, and their family. Gemma and Tara may be different in a lot of ways, and they haven't always gotten along, but what similarities they do share may count for more, among them strength, determination and their love for Jax. On the allied front, SAMCRO is set up to work with the Galindo Cartel, which introduces us to Danny Trejo’s character Romeo, an excellent addition to the show. Despite being fresh out of prison, there’s work to be done and decisions to be made as to how the club will get back on its feet and what direction it needs to take. Sons of Anarchy is multi-layered, with numerous stories unfolding and overlapping at all times. It’s for that reason that I would recommend newcomers check out the first couple of seasons on Netflix before diving into the new season. While Season 4 may start off with a new beginning of sorts, there’s a lot of history with these characters and the premiere doesn’t waste a lot of time getting us caught up. For those of you who’ve already seen the first three seasons, I think you’re going to like how things pick up in Season 4. The themes aren’t all that different than they were back when the series first began. Perspectives have been altered somewhat, but SAMCRO is what it has always been. It’s Charming that’s changing and I’m excited to see how the crew adjusts to the way things are run now, and whether they’ll be successful in resisting what’s happening in their town, or if the impending changes, added to their growing internal issues will result in SAMCRO imploding. At this point, anything can happen. Sons of Anarchy Season 4 premieres Tuesday, September 6th at 10:00 p.m. ET on FX.

Dead Island Review – Zombieland!

Let’s get this out of the way from the start. Dead Island has failed to live up to the hype it gained when the game’s debut trailer was released several months ago. Those hoping to experience the emotional resonance which the trailer provided may be disappointed by Dead Island’s sub-serious tone and melee focused combat. For better or for worse, Dead Island is less about protecting your loved ones from an onslaught of vicious zombies and more about splitting heads with a worn-out pipe as you plod around the island doing everything that everyone tells you to do. It’s hard to describe Dead Island without making it sound like both the best thing ever and a complete mess at the same time. The game is essentially a first person, weapon-based brawler mixed with a co-operative, sandbox RPG. If Left 4 Dead and Fallout 3 spent an unholy night together in Dead Rising’s bed, Dead Island would be their unholy offspring. Set on a fictional Island resort located in the Pacific Ocean, you control one of four playable characters who must assist others and restore order amidst a contagious zombie outbreak. Each of the four characters are immune to contracting the zombie virus and also happen to specialize in certain weapon types, whether its firearms, knifes or blunt objects. The character selection screen gives you a narrated run down of each character’s back story although none of that factors in to the game itself. One of the most surprising things about Dead Island is just how long the game is. I was expecting to be done with the island after 8 hours or so, however in that time I had yet to even obtain a gun. Your initial playthrough will take you approximately 25/30 hours to complete and that’s without taking on all of the side quests. Most of the side quests are interesting and although they’re completely optional, the experience you earn upon completing them can prove to be vital. Each character has their own individual skill trees which are divided up in to three separate categories; Fury, Combat and Survival. Since the game doesn’t penalize you too harshly for dying I chose to mainly focus on improving my combat skills and I’d advise others to do the same. Regardless of how you decide to upgrade your chosen character, watching as they become stronger and more capable of defending themselves is gratifying. “I found myself with emotional attachments to both the desperate survivors and the island itself! The setting is definitely one of the best things about Dead Island. It’s not often I found myself completely immersed in a game world but after a few hours of playtime I found myself with emotional attachments to both the desperate survivors who needed my help and the island itself. It reached a point where I was accepting every side mission I came across, not because I needed the money, XP or the reward which came with it, but because I genuinely cared about protecting the island. Exploring new areas of the map and discovering just how vast the game world is will keep you playing for hours on end. Almost every section of the island is littered with the walking dead, who level up as you do. This may annoy some players since you’re never given the opportunity to feel like a complete bad-ass but the constant sense of panic and vulnerability makes for a more cohesive experience. Locating new groups of survivors and gaining access to new safe zone keeps the game feeling fresh even when you’re several hours in. The ability to fast travel from one safe zone to another is a godsend since the island is truly massive and drivable vehicles are few and far between. Each safe zone contains a workbench which you can use to repair, upgrade or modify the weapons in you inventory, providing you have enough money to pay do so. The huge array of weapons available in the game is staggering. Paddles, pipes, baseball bats, hammers, handguns, daggers, butcher knives, the list seems virtually endless! Factor in the aforementioned ability to modify weapons (ie, turn a baseball bat in to a flaming baseball bat) and the weapon variety increases exponentially. Each of the melee weapons take on damage with every blow, damage which only cash and a workbench can repair. Scouring every inch of every room for cash and loot to sell quickly becomes second nature as you’ll often find yourself in need of money. “Those who prefer to share their experience with others will love Dead Island’s multiplayer offering I’ve neglected to mention the game’s story until now because quite frankly, it’s not important. It’s the same “OMG Zombies!” tale which we’ve heard a countless number of times before, only now the outbreak is on a beautiful island instead of some random part of America. I found myself caring much more about restoring order than I did about learning the truth or finding out exactly why my character was different from the other island inhabitants. The games terrible cutscenes (which shows all four playable characters even if you’re playing alone) also failed to intrigue, making it hard for me to resist the urge to skip them. Those who prefer to share their experience with others will love Dead Island’s (online-only) multiplayer offering. The jump in/jump out co-op works surprisingly well, allowing you to join a friend’s game at any point providing their rank is equal to or lower than yours. Given the length of the game, you probably won’t be completing the entire campaign with the same group of friends but taking on quests with random players can also lead to much excitement. As great as the multiplayer can be, I personally preferred playing on my own. Rolling solo gives a sense of fear and abandonment which isn’t present when you have other zombie slayers beside you. I also found the game to be a tad too easy when playing co-operatively, even though the difficult scales to accommodate for any extra players. As impressive as Dead Island is in terms of gameplay, the game is less remarkable on a technical level. Although the environments look great, the characters that populate the universe generally look low-res and unconvincing during times of desperation. The game also suffers from slow down, screen tearing and frequent texture pop-in, which is understandable given the scope of the game but it’s still unfortunate. I was also disappointed by the way enemies react after being hit. Crushing a zombies skull under the weight of mallet just doesn’t feel as satisfying as it should, although dismembering limbs which a rusty hook never gets old! The trailer left a lot of gamers excited for Dead Island, even without them truly understanding what the game was all about. Misconception issues aside, Dead Island is an extremely fun game which will keep players busy for a long time. The captivating setting, huge assortment of weapons and great co-op implementation more than make up for any technical shortcomings. While its far from perfect, the developers over at Techland deserve a lot of props for creating one of the best games that Deep Silver has ever published.

Tiki Barber remains unemployed and sad

When Tiki Barber told HBO that he was returning to football because he "needed the game," and because he "needed to prove to [himself] that he could be successful at something," I thought it sounded like a recipe for a personal mental health disaster. Now that NFL rosters are set at 53, and Tiki Barber never got to sniff one, I hope that's not true. According to Peter King at Sports Illustrated, Tiki isn't taking it well.

Bastrop Texas Wildfire

The Bastrop County Complex Fire has consumed more than 25,000 acres and destroyed an estimated 476 homes or structures since yesterday, Reuters reports. The Geomac imagery below shows how tenuous the situation is in and around Bastrop remains. The red circles in the image represents actively burning fire. Orange represents fire burned over the past 12 hours. You can see active burning up to Lake Bastrop. The fire is burning on all fronts with no obvious anchor point. It is easy to see from the Geomac imagery that the Bastrop Fire has no containment. Bastrop has a population of over 5,000. Fox News has reported 250 firefighters are working the fire as crews are stretched around the state. Simple math tells us there are not enough fire crews to protect all the structures in Bastrop. This fire will burn as long as there is wind to push it. Civilians need to heed evacuation orders. Note too the fire burning West of Bastrop threatening the town of Wyldwood.

Large Crocodile captured in Philippine

Villagers and veteran hunters have captured a one-ton saltwater crocodile which they plan to make the star of a planned ecotourism park in a southern Philippine town, an official said Monday. Mayor Edwin Cox Elorde said dozens of villagers and experts ensnared the 21-foot (6.4-meter) male crocodile along a creek in Bunawan township in Agusan del Sur province after a three-week hunt. It could be one of the largest crocodiles to be captured alive in recent years, he said, quoting local crocodile experts. Elorde said the crocodile killed a water buffalo in an attack witnessed by villagers last month and was also suspected of having attacked a fisherman who went missing in July. He said he sought the help of experts at a crocodile farm in western Palawan province. "We were nervous but it's our duty to deal with a threat to the villagers," Elorde told The Associated Press by telephone. "When I finally stood before it, I couldn't believe my eyes." After initial sightings at a creek, the hunters set four traps, which the crocodile destroyed. They then used sturdier traps using steel cables, one of which finally caught the enormous reptile late Saturday, he said. About 100 people had to pull the crocodile, which weighs about 2,370 pounds (1,075 kilograms), from the creek to a clearing where a crane lifted it into a truck, he said. The crocodile was placed in a fenced cage in an area where the town plans to build an ecotourism park for species found in a vast marshland in Agusan, an impoverished region about 515 miles (830 kilometers) southeast of Manila, Elorde said. "It will be the biggest star of the park," Elorde said, adding that villagers were happy that they would be able to turn the dangerous crocodile "from a threat into an asset." Despite the catch, villagers remain wary because several crocodiles still roam the outskirts of the farming town of about 37,000 people. They have been told to avoid venturing into marshy areas alone at night, Elorde said.

Rafael Nadal collapses at post-match press conference

A scary moment happened to one of the favorites at this year's U.S. Open, and it wasn't anywhere close to a tennis court when it went down. Defending champion Rafael Nadal was taking questions after his straight-set win on Sunday over David Nalbandian when he started to grimace, only to collapse under the microphone desk. The interview room was cleared, and after 10 minutes, reporters were allowed back in. Nadal assured everyone he was okay, and it was just cramps, but needed ice packs for his legs and was in what looked like serious pain. Watch below.

New York Anchorman's Baby, Babysitter Found Dead

Police were Friday investigating how the one-month-old son of a local TV anchorman and his babysitter died in a home on New York's Long Island Thursday night.

Citing information from police, WABC-TV reported the babysitter likely suffered a fatal medical condition and collapsed onto the infant.

Police received a 911 phone call around 9:35pm local time to the Greenlawn, N.Y., home of News 12 anchorman Michael Baldwin, The Wall Street Journal reported. They arrived to find both one-month-old Michael Baldwin III, and his babysitter, Teresa Coffey, 39, unconscious.

The baby was given CPR at the scene and taken to Huntington Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said. Coffey, of Port Jefferson Station, was also transported to Huntington Hospital where she was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

The county Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy to determine how the two died.

Recent tweets on Michael Baldwin's Twitter page focused on the birth of his son and time spent with the baby, who was born in early August. In one tweet, Baldwin wrote, "After 17 days in the hospital my son goes home. Can't wait!"

Baldwin told WABC-TV on Friday that he called 911 after finding the babysitter slumped over his son on the couch.

"I went over to her," he said. "I began to move her, and then I saw him. He was under her. He was just crushed. His face was kind of blue. I knew he was gone."
